GIVE AWAY ALL I HAVE???

I have a friend who went to church and heard the preacher say you must give away all you have to the poor in order to get to heaven. Maybe the preacher said that. But maybe there was more to the message that my friend did not hear because he was distracted by those words. He left church that day fearful and without hope. I assured him God is not asking all Christians to give all they have to the poor. But He does say help those in need and to never allow the accumulation of wealth or material possessions to get in the way of us loving Him or loving others. Rule of thumb: scripture must always be taken in context.
