When facing challenging and "mourningful" experiences we often quote this verse trying to bring some comfort to the situation. However, this is an often misquoted verse. This is not speaking about the mourning caused by obsessant sin, tamper tantrums, or the brokenness that comes from a rebellious lifestyle towards God and His ways. The "mourning" taking place here is due to injustice and the prevailing sinfulness that causes it. The "comfort" that Jesus is talking about, is a comfort that comes from God when we line ourselves up with Him. In any case, when going through difficult times, whether experiencing it or witnessing it, the comfort comes when we willfully and faithfully turn to God for understanding and remaining obedient to His ways. Too often we want the comfort that Jesus speaks of but instead we run to a bottle, a drug, another relationship, some form of entertainment or or the pursuit of some new "money-making" scheme. Friend, you will never find lasting comfort apart from God, because anything you run to other than God is your idol. NO idol can bring you the comfort Jesus speaks of. Turn to Jesus today. Follow Him, trust Him, live for Him and find true comfort.

True blessings are not wealth, health, success and the likes. True blessings are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. These are known as the Fruit of the Spirit. When you truly place your faith in Jesus, the Holy Spirit (God, the third person of the Trinity) comes into you, taking up residence in you. So these virtues are the natural fruit of the Spirit which lives in you when you believe. When you live by faith in Jesus, there is peace, there is joy, there is love. When you live by faith in Jesus, your outlook on life changes. When you live by faith in Jesus you let Him take the lead. You may not be rich, popular or successful in the world's eyes, but you will have peace, love, joy and all the things that money can't buy. That's the true blessing and you can have it right now. All you have to do is place your faith in Jesus. Give Him the reins, make Him the Lord of your life and be amazed by the awesome fruit that will come from it. Another day, another battle. As a Christian I am called to glorify God in all I think, say and do. But how much of today will be made up of my own desires for my own glory? How much will I allow outward circumstances to dictate my attitude, emotions and actions? The victory comes only through a consistent and conscious awareness of this battle along with a solid walk and personal relationship with God. For the Christian, this is the daily grind. Not one of working for someone or picking up after someone or looking after someone, but standing up to someone in particular, the devil. I can do all things through Christ. I can work hard and be joyful about it IF I stand my ground against the devil and his schemes. Joy and contentment for today lies in the outcome of this battle. Joy and contentment is all part of the victory celebration when I stand my ground against the enemy's deceptive schemes in obedience to God, bringing Him the glory. Christian, the battle rages on! Stand your ground. Remember your brothers and sisters throughout the world are undergoing the same battle, so stand firm. A rich young ruler asked Jesus "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" And Jesus responded "go sell all your possessions and give your money to the poor, then come and follow me." Why would Jesus say such a thing? Is that what it takes to get to heaven? Not necessarily. Like the rich young ruler, we are challenged to give up anything and everything that would distract us from fully devoting ourselves to following Jesus and loving God. The young ruler had a lot of wealth and when faced with the challenge, walked away from Jesus. The question remains to us, is there anything that is holding you back from truly following Jesus? What is it? Is it worth more to you than eternal life? Truth is, the more stuff we have the more we are required to let go, because the more blessings, the more distractions when it comes to following Jesus. Is it worth it to you? My prayer for you is not that God would bless you with health, wealth and prosperity so you can have all you need and be joyful in life. Quite often those are the main distractions the enemy uses to keep us from loving and serving God the way we should. My prayer for you is that you come to know God through Christ because true joy comes through an intimate relationship God, not health, wealth and prosperity. |
